Healthy Pregnancy Tips

Pregnancy and the birth of your baby should be your greatest achievement—not your greatest fear. While it is completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety, having the right knowledge and support can make all the difference.

In this article, I provide useful, practical tips to help you stay as healthy as possible during pregnancy, reduce anxiety, and truly enjoy your parenting journey.

Keeping Healthy in Pregnancy

The first step most women take after discovering they are pregnant is to confirm the pregnancy with an ultrasound scan at around 6–8 weeks. This scan is important as it:
✔️ Confirms the pregnancy.
✔️ Detects your baby’s heartbeat.
✔️ Determines accurate gestational age and due date.

Following this, it is very important to attend an antenatal clinic or visit your doctor between 8–12 weeks of pregnancy. Early antenatal visits are essential because they ensure that:
✔️ Screening blood tests are completed.
✔️ Blood pressure is monitored.
✔️ Urine tests are done.
✔️ Blood sugar levels are checked.

These early assessments help detect any abnormalities or potential risks as soon as possible. Early detection allows for proper management, reducing the risk of complications during pregnancy and labour.

Regular antenatal visits also provide reassurance, allow monitoring of your baby’s growth and development, and ensure that you remain healthy throughout your pregnancy journey.

Antenatal Education

Attending a good antenatal course—whether virtual or in person—is highly recommended. These classes provide valuable knowledge and help reduce fear of the unknown.
Babies R Us offers a free virtual antenatal course (available on the website under the Courses and Events tab), making it accessible and convenient for all parents.

These courses will help you:
✔️ Prepare emotionally and physically for birth.
✔️ Understand the stages of labour and delivery.
✔️ Learn breathing and relaxation techniques.
✔️ Gain confidence in caring for your newborn.

Nutrition During Pregnancy

Nutrition is one of the most important aspects of a healthy pregnancy. Even if you experience nausea or a reduced appetite, it is essential to nourish your body and your growing baby.

Healthy Eating Tips:

✔️ Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.
✔️ Include whole grains and protein-rich foods.
✔️ Snack regularly to maintain energy levels.
✔️ Choose healthy snacks such as yogurt, pregnancy milkshakes, soups, dried fruit, and nuts.
✔️ Consider pregnancy teas, nutritious bars, or other pregnancy supplements if needed (Babies R Us stock a wide variety of Pregnancy Supplements)

Eating small, frequent meals can also help manage nausea and keep your energy levels stable throughout the day.

Foods to Avoid:

For safety, avoid:
Undercooked eggs, meat, fish, and chicken.
Unpasteurised milk and cheeses.
Excess caffeine.
Alcohol.
Smoking.

These substances can pose risks to your baby’s development and overall pregnancy health.

Supplements & Medication

Taking a good prenatal vitamin is highly recommended during pregnancy. Ideally, it should contain:
✔️ Iron – supports brain development and prevents anaemia.
✔️ Calcium – strengthens your baby’s bones and teeth.
✔️ Protein – helps build new tissues and supports growth.
✔️ Omega-3 fats – essential for brain and eye development.

Always consult your pharmacist, clinic sister, or doctor before taking any medication or supplement during pregnancy.

It is equally important to avoid:
Very hot baths and saunas, as they can raise your body temperature.
Extreme sports or activities that may risk injury.

Pregnancy is a natural and beautiful journey, filled with both excitement and challenges. While some discomforts are normal, taking care of your health - both physically and emotionally, can make a significant difference in your overall experience.

By attending regular antenatal check-ups, maintaining a balanced diet, staying informed, and listening to your body, you are giving your baby the best possible start in life.
The information provided in this article is designed to support you in having a healthy pregnancy and a positive, fulfilling birth experience.

Remember, you are not alone on this journey. Reach out to your healthcare provider whenever you need guidance or reassurance.
