Common Pregnancy Ailments & Remedies

Pregnancy is a natural process, but it often comes with a variety of minor discomforts.

Understanding these and knowing how to manage them can make your journey much more comfortable.

1. Nausea

Nausea is very common in early pregnancy and is caused by hormonal changes.

Helpful tips:
✔️ Eat a snack before getting out of bed (such as a salty biscuit).
✔️Sip on ginger tea or warm water with fresh ginger.
✔️ Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day.
✔️ Choose cold foods like yogurt, pregnancy milkshakes, fruits, and salads.
✔️ Cold foods are often more appealing when feeling nauseous.

Safe treatments: Preganause, Natura Moton tissue salts.

2. Indigestion

Indigestion occurs due to progesterone relaxing the muscles of the digestive system, including the stomach sphincter.

Tips to relieve symptoms:
✔️ Avoid fried, fatty, or spicy foods.
✔️ Eat smaller meals more frequently.
✔️ Drink milk, yogurt, or water as natural antacids.
✔️ Avoid eating late at night.
✔️ Sleep slightly elevated using pillows.
✔️ Lie on your left side to aid digestion.

Safe treatment: Gelusil Plus

3. Constipation

Constipation is caused by slowed digestion and reduced bowel movement due to progesterone.

Tips for relief:
✔️ Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
✔️ Eat high-fibre foods such as chia seeds, fruits, and vegetables.
✔️ Stay physically active if possible.

Treatment: Natura Kronolax tissue salts or doctor-approved laxatives

4. Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids can develop due to constipation and increased blood volume during pregnancy.

Advice:

✔️ Avoid straining when passing stools.
✔️ Treat constipation early.
✔️ Maintain a high-fibre diet.

5. Headaches

Headaches are often hormone-related but should always be monitored.

Important:
Check your blood pressure regularly at a clinic or pharmacy. High blood pressure can be dangerous and must be ruled out.

Other possible cause: Sinus congestion, which is common in pregnancy.

Relief options:
✔️ Saline nasal sprays.
✔️ Steam inhalation.
✔️ Vicks applied to the chest
✔️ Natura Catarrho tissue salts for congestion.
✔️ Natura Starlight tissue salts for flu-like symptoms.

6. Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are caused by rapid stretching of the skin as your body grows.

Prevention tips:
✔️ Start applying a good moisturiser from around 12 weeks.
✔️ Keep skin hydrated and nourished.

Common products: Bio-Oil, Happy Event, Purity Stretch mark cream.

7. Body Aches & Pains

These may include back pain, pelvic pain, groin pain, hip pain, sciatica, or numbness in the legs.

These discomforts are caused by:
•  Stretching of the abdominal muscles.
•  Pressure from the baby’s head on nerves and ligaments in the pelvis.

Helpful tips:
✔️ Consider using a pregnancy support belt.
✔️ Sit on a donut cushion or exercise ball.
✔️ Maintain good posture.
✔️ Use supportive pillows and bedding.
✔️ Try massage or warm compresses.
✔️ Take magnesium salt baths.
✔️ Do gentle stretching exercises.

8. Varicose & Spider Veins

These occur due to increased blood volume and slower circulation.

Tips:
✔️ Avoid standing for long period.
✔️ Elevate your feet when resting.
✔️ Stay active to improve circulation.

9. Swollen Feet & Ankles

Swelling occurs for similar reasons as varicose veins.

Tips:
✔️ Elevate your feet whenever possible.
✔️ Avoid sitting or standing for long periods.
✔️ Soak your feet in warm water with magnesium salts.

Danger Signs During Pregnancy

Although complications are rare, it is very important to be aware of warning signs.

Seek help urgently if you experience:
•  Any vaginal bleeding.
•  Blurred vision, swelling of the face or body, or severe headaches.
•  Leaking fluid from the vagina.
•  Persistent abdominal pain.
•  Decreased foetal movement.
•  More than four contractions in one hour.
•  Severe back pain.
•  Persistent diarrhoea and vomiting.

Early intervention can prevent serious complications and protect both mother and baby.
